We are asking that fire, Police and local leaders along with citizens of the their communities wear pink shirts on the 25th, 26th and 27th of October. We ask that any fundraising monies collected on these three days, please be directed to a group that supports women who are battling this terrible disease (Cancer). We also would like the money to stay home from where it originated. We support all the organizations that help women in the fight against cancer. In one year we have over 100 Fire and Police departments now wearing pink shirts and raising money for their respected cities. We have been recognized by Congressman Harry Mitchell for our work across the Country, he just read our mission statement in front of Congress and asked all it's members to recognize our efforts.
Cities here locally that are supporting the program are Peoria, Scottsdale and the Luke Air Force Base Fire department. Our goal is to have dozens of pink fire trucks travel across the Country every year until all our cities and or departments support women by at the very least wearing pink. In closing we are helping all women in this Country, we are showing them we care, by caring enough to wear pink. Pink Heals Fire Station 1 www.rrmdesign.com

The Guardians of the Ribbon Inc. plan to build our first Pink Heals fire station in honor of women who have gone through the rigors of cancer. Survivors or family members who have lost their battle to this ugly disease will be proudly honored on the bricks and landscaping that will support this great fire station. Of course this station will not be a working fire station but it will be home to Guardians of the Ribbon Inc. a non-profit that supports all organizations that help women cope with the burden of cancer.
Pink Heals Station 1 will be open to the public; we will use this station to hold fundraisers, public tours and educational seminars. The “Great Pink Bay” which will hold our fire trucks will have a stage and kitchen so that the space can be used for fundraisers. Our boutique and café will be a great place to shop and eat on a Sunday afternoon. Outside and around the station our landscaping and courtyard will have a peaceful and calming ambiance with a meditation garden and a waterfall.
We will have pink bricks for sale on our web-site; these bricks will help us raise the necessary money to build Pink Heals Station 1. Pink Bricks that are personalized will be $75 and plain pink bricks will cost $50. Please go to www.pinkheals.com to buy a brick.

2008 Guardians of The Ribbon Firetruck Tour : Firefighter calls on locals to wear pink. Tour aims to raise cancer awareness.

Glendale, Ariz., Firefighter Dave Graybill donned pink turnout gear and drove a pink fire truck across the country this past fall (2008) to rally support for women who have survived cancer and towards the much needed research that will continue to save lives. . Starting from the Glendale Arizona Fire Department in August, Graybill stopped in 32 cities to join with other firefighters, police officers and local officials to promote the cause. During Graybill's Pink Ribbon Tour he called for local officials to "Care Enough to Wear Pink" to show support for breast cancer survivors.

Q: How did you pull the project together?
A: I bought a big map of the U.S. and started putting dots where I wanted to drive a pink fire truck. I asked a company to build me a stainless steel statue of a pink ribbon, and they did. It took them seven months and about 500 hours after work and on weekends, and I pull that ribbon on a pink trailer. While that was being built, I was forming a non-profit group, and we created our own clothing line so we could generate funds, because I'm a fireman, and I don't have any money. The most wonderful thing that happened was, I'm in a Starbucks and meet a friend who introduces me to his wife, and I tell her what I'm going to do and why I'm doing it, and she gets out her checkbook and writes me a $13,500 check so I can buy a fire truck that I found on eBay from a firefighter in Jacksonville, Fla. A company wrapped it pink for free, and I'm driving it down the freeway, and some lady starts screaming at me, "Pull over, pull over." [She] was the first person to sign the truck.

Q: What's going to happen to the truck?
A: I'm going to pick up another truck, and I want to build a pink fire station. My goal is to get developers, architects and community leaders and people all over the country to build a shrine to our women, and every brick on the fire station will have the name of a woman who has gone through cancer. It will have a retail store, a restaurant and the pink fire trucks on display. Those pink trucks will go out in the community and help women with cancer.

6/14/09 SAVE THE LAKE RALLY : SAVE THE LAKE RALLY ................. SUN, JUNE 14TH, 2009

Three hundred Lake Hopatcong area residents, business owners, boaters and anglers filled the docks and the parking lot of Kabobs at the Northwood Inn on Sunday, June 14, to combine their individual voices of concern into one strong voice demanding better management of the waters of Lake Hopatcong. The "Save the Lake" Rally was organized by the Lake Hopatcong Alliance, (a non-political, volunteer-driven group comprised of local homeowners and business owners), in an effort to raise awareness at the state level. "What most people don't realize is that Lake Hopatcong doesn't have a voice, that is until now, with the Alliance." Ray Fernandez, one of the founders of the Alliance and owner of Bridge Marina in Jefferson Township, addressed the crowd. "As a group we have strength in numbers to voice to the state what affects us as boaters, as fishermen, as residents and as homeowners. We have the means to raise the lake, we need to activate these means." He continued, " There seems to be no one looking out for you- the users and the business owners. If we do not do anything, if we do not make our voices heard, the lake will not be properly managed. If we do nothing, then nothing good will come of this lake alliance, formed as the voice for the citizens." Fernandez stated that the water management plan needs to be revised and that the state has turned their back on the importance of weed harvesting and water quality. "I hope that people understand they can make a difference," Fernandez said to the crowd of onlookers, "If we all come together as one group, we can't be ignored." Also in attendance at the rally, were Senator Steven Oroho (R), Jefferson Township Mayor Russ Felter, Borough of Hopatcong Mayor Sylvia Petillo and Roxbury Councilman Richard Zoschak.

Steve Gebeloff, one of the alliance's nine directors, also spoke to the crowd advising that "the lake's well-being shouldn't be jeopardized by concerns about downstream. There would be enough water for the lake and downstream if the state had not mismanaged the lake's levels. We want the Lake Hopatcong Commission, the governor and the DEP to know that a lot of people depend on this lake for their livelihood and as a source of recreation." The Alliance reported having one hundred new members sign up within one week and their numbers keep growing as their mission is rapidly being supported by many of the surrounding communities. Additional signatures were being collected at Sunday's rally and a photo of the rally crowd holding their signs of support is being sent to Trenton with the hopes that state officials will take some action to improve the situation. Tom and Joan Elbel , residents of Jefferson Township for more than 25 years, were among many rally-goers sharing the same common thread of choosing to enjoy the waters of Lake Hopatcong every year as opposed to boating in other lakes. "We were finally able to put our boat in the water last Sunday, so much later in the season compared to past years."

Becca Johnson Fernandez, Secretary for the Alliance, said that the Lake Hopatcong Alliance was formed this year in response to the recent water level issues and added, "The alliance is about far more than water levels. It is also about the water quality and it's future recreational, environmental and economic values. It is about bringing people together to work to improve the lake." The Alliance consists of a nine member Board of Directors, comprised of a mixture of residents and business owners. Becca Fernandez commented on this formulation, saying "We felt this mixture of board members was important to make sure that all interests were considered - including recreation, preservation and business." The Board of Directors consists of Ray Fernandez, (President), Ron Sorensen,(Vice President), Yanique Thorman, (Treasurer), Becca Johnson Fernandez, (Secretary), and five board members : Nancy Blakney, Darlene Cornelius, Steve Gebeloff, John Kurzman and Maria Pappas.

In late April, local marina and restaurant owners filed a lawsuit asking the state to stop all water flow out of the lake either through the Lake Hopatcong Dam or the Hopatcong State Park Fountain. The business owners state that the NJDEP was allowing the discharge of between 4 million to 8 million gallons of water per day to flow from Lake Hopatcong to Lake Musconetcong, while Lake Musconetcong was at flood stage and passing millions of gallons per day in excess of the discharge requirement to the Musconetcong River. The alliance feels that the state mishandled the 60-inch draw down last fall that resulted in Lake Hopatcong's water levels being 3 feet lower than it should be at the start of the season in March.

The Alliance claims that even in light of the mismanaged water level issue, the low precipitation into the lake and the existing current low water level with excessive waters flowing to the Musconetcong, that the State is not acknowledging that Lake Hopatcong is in a dire situation and it will not formulate a plan to return the water level. Lake Hopatcong is New Jersey's largest inland lake with 500,000 annual visitors. It's watershed hosts over 65,000 residents and there is an estimated 5,000 registered boats on the lake.

For more information about joining the Lake Hopatcong Alliance please visit their website at www.lakehopatcongalliance.com. Membership is free and open to anyone interested in safeguarding Lake Hopatcong.
