**NEW!! Sparta Vol First Aid Squad Loses 2 Ambulances in Fire 6/15/09 : Shortly after 6pm on Monday, June 15, 2009 , the Sparta Fire Department was dispatched to a working structure fire at the Sparta Volunteer First Aid Squad building located at 14 Sparta Ave in their township.

Upon arrival, first responding units witnessed heavy black smoke and flames fully engulfing an ambulance inside the building and quickly spreading to the entire garage. Shortly thereafter a few small explosions were heard and flames rolled out of the building.

Approximately twenty people, some attending a yoga class, were inside the Squad building on Monday evening when the fast-moving fire spread through the garage bays. A member of the Sparta First Aid Squad, who was inside when the fire broke out, raced over to an adjoining room where the yoga class was being held and immediately began evacuating everyone.

Sparta Engine 8 was first on the scene and attacked the blaze with their deck gun followed by hand lines. Chief Theike requested a FAST team from Andover Twp and ambulances were brought in from Ogdensburg and Hardyston to assist at the scene.

During the same time frame, Sparta police dispatched the Ogdensburg Fire Dept as mutual aid to respond into Sparta for a house that had been struck by lightening with smoke reportedly coming from the electrical outlets. One pumper engine from Jefferson Fire Co # 2 was relocated into Sparta Township to stand by at the Sparta firehouse.

The fire at the Squad building was quickly brought under control by the Sparta Fire Department. The fire was contained to three garage bays, while the upper portion of the building sustained smoke and water damage. One ambulance was spared, ambulance 4192, which was out on an unrelated call in the township when the fire occurred at the building. Rigs 4191 and 4193 were destroyed in the blaze and the First Responder Vehicle, a Dodge Durango, that was parked just outside the garage doors, was damaged.

Sparta police said that their preliminary investigation showed that the fire started onboard one of the ambulances as an oxygen tank was being checked for pressure. There was lightning in the area around that time, prompting initial speculation that the stormy weather played a role, but authorities did not indicate any connection.

Sparta Township expects to provide ambulance service at full capacity and has made mutual aid arrangements from neighboring towns including Lakeland, Ogdensburg and Hardyston, according to Mary Hookway, the squad's public information officer. She estimated that each of the destroyed ambulances, both insured and owned by the town, could cost up to $200,000 to replace .

The ambulance bays, built in 1993, were an addition to the 36-year-old building. The ambulance squad, founded in 1947, has approximately 60 volunteers and owns the building.

4/12/09 Two Houston Bravest Lost Battling Easter Morning House Fire : 4/12/09 Two Houston Bravest Lost Battling Easter Morning House Fire

Two Houston, Texas firefighters -- a veteran captain with nearly 30 years experience and a probational firefighter with just a month in the field -- died early Easter morning battling a house fire.

During an aggressive interior attack of the one-story structure, command determined fire conditions were too intense and backed all crews out. During the post evacuation accountability check, the two firefighters were determined to be missing. The Houston Chronicle reported Sunday afternoon that the victims were Captain James Harlow, a 50-year-old with nearly 30 years on the job in Houston. He was the caption at Station 26 for the past five years.
Probationary firefighter Damien Hobbs, 29, was also killed. He had just graduated from the Houston fire academy in March and was on his first assignment at Station 26 since March 7, the Chronicle reported.

A mayday was called, KHOU reported, but intense flames kept crews from going back in for search and rescue for some period of time. The exact timeline of the incident was not immediately available.
The Associated Press reported that the victim's bodies were found in the house between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Rescue workers attempted CPR but the men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The blaze was dispatched at 12:14 a.m. local time, according to the HFD's Active Incidents log. The first due companies were from Station 26, where an engine, ambulance, ladder company and District Chief responded from. Station 26 is about 1.2 miles from the scene of the blaze on Oak Vista. KTRK reported that at 4:26am, Houston firefighters formed two lines outside of the home as the bodies of the fallen firefighters were removed from the scene by stretcher.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as firefighters are providing their accounts of the incident to investigatiors. There were several reports that a resident of the home was rescued during the blaze, but additional information wasn't immediately available. The fire gained intensity, according to KHOU, after crews cut a hole in the roof, reporting that after high winds may have fueled the spread of the blaze to a larger portion of the home.

2009 Pink Heals Firetruck Tour (a.k.a The Pink Ribbon Tour 2008) : Firefighter calls on locals to wear pink. Tour aims to raise breast cancer awareness

Glendale, Ariz., Firefighter Dave Graybill donned pink turnout gear and drove a pink fire truck across the country this past fall to rally support for breast cancer survivors and research. Starting from the Glendale Fire Department in August, Graybill stopped in 32 cities to join with other firefighters, police officers and local officials to promote the cause. During Graybill's Pink Ribbon Tour he called for local officials to "Care Enough to Wear Pink" to show support for breast cancer survivors. American City & County spoke to Graybill as he wrapped up his tour about his motivation, experiences during the adventure, and goals for continuing to generate breast cancer awareness.

Q: Where in the world did you get the idea to do this?
A: A friend of mine from Las Cruces told me his fire department was going to wear pink shirts to honor the fight against breast cancer for the women of Las Cruces . The minute he told me, I thought it was a great idea. But, the following morning, I woke up and thought, why shouldn't all men in this country rally in support of our women who are sick? So, I came up with the pink fire truck to signify our fight that will never end.

Q: How did you pull the project together?
A: I bought a big map of the U.S. and started putting dots where I wanted to drive a pink fire truck. I asked a company to build me a stainless steel statue of a pink ribbon, and they did. It took them seven months and about 500 hours after work and on weekends, and I pull that ribbon on a pink trailer. While that was being built, I was forming a non-profit group, and we created our own clothing line so we could generate funds, because I'm a fireman, and I don't have any money. The most wonderful thing that happened was, I'm in a Starbucks and meet a friend who introduces me to his wife, and I tell her what I'm going to do and why I'm doing it, and she gets out her checkbook and writes me a $13,500 check so I can buy a fire truck that I found on eBay from a firefighter in Jacksonville, Fla. A company wrapped it pink for free, and I'm driving it down the freeway, and some lady starts screaming at me, "Pull over, pull over." [She] was the first person to sign the truck.

Q: What's going to happen to the truck?
A: I'm going to pick up another truck, and I want to build a pink fire station. My goal is to get developers, architects and community leaders and people all over the country to build a shrine to our women, and every brick on the fire station will have the name of a woman who has gone through cancer. It will have a retail store, a restaurant and the pink fire trucks on display. Those pink trucks will go out in the community and help women with cancer.

Multi - Agency Ice Rescue Drill 2-22-09 : First responders from Mount Arlington, Hopatcong and Jefferson Township donned their cold water ice rescue suits and made their way into the frigid waters of Lake Hopatcong on Sunday morning, February 22, 2009 to partake in an ice rescue drill. A slow passing weather front blanketed the area with a constant light snow, cutting down visibilty on the frozen lake. Rescuers practiced their basic ice rescue skills, such as crawling out on the ice to a victim with the use of ice awls or picks, self rescue, solo rescue (one rescuer/one victim) and two man rescues with the use of a Marsars sled and other rescue devices. Rescuers operating the tether lines manually pulled both the victim and the rescuer from the break in the ice back to the shoreline. Tether operators must know which safety lines are connected to the victim and which ones are attached to the rescuer. Commonly, different colored safety ropes are used for this reason. Knowing which rope to pull and which rope to provide slack, helps to coordinate an effective rescue. ****** The snowfall created quite a challenge while taking these photos, as you will see later in the gallery.... *****

Morris County Sheriff's Office Mourns the Loss of Retired Detective Lisa di Palma Bonfiglio 2-07-09 : Lisa di Palma Bonfiglio, a longtime county sheriff's officer who publicly shared her nine-year battle with breast cancer, passed away on February 7, 2009, at age 40 in Naples, Florida. Lisa was a 1987 graduate of Morris Knolls High School. She was the daughter of former Denville police Officer Michael di Palma, who retired in 1990, who was described as his daughter's inspiration in pursuing a police career.

Lisa received her Associate degree in Criminal Justice in 1993 at the County College of Morris. In 1990 Lisa attended the Morris County Fire and Police Academy and began her career with the Morris County Sheriff's Office. She rose to the rank of sheriff's detective during a 17-year career that ended with her retirement in January 2008. She was a Certified Fire Arms Instructor for the Morris County Police Academy, a member of the Morris County Detectives Association a member of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the "Police Unity Tour" and a member of the Italian American Police Society of New Jersey.

Lisa was a native of Denville who moved to Rockaway in 1992 and received an associate's degree in criminal justice at the County College of Morris. She was a firearms instructor at the Morris County Police Academy and was among a group of female police officers featured in "Women & the Badge," a 13-part documentary airing on the Oxygen network eight years ago. She was filmed working at the morgue, investigating a fire, attempting to determine a cause of death and analyzing fingerprints. The documentary also ventured into her personal life, with di Palma Bonfiglio acknowledging her struggle with breast cancer. She was diagnosed at age 31. "I think it's important for young women in their early 30s to realize they can get breast cancer." Lisa became an advocate for early cancer detection. "I wanted that message to be out there. You're not exempt just because you're young. Or just because it doesn't run in your family, which mine didn't. Or just because you feel healthy, because I felt great."

Last November, sheriff's Detective Debbie Daniello helped organize a "Love for Lisa" fundraiser at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany that was attended by 750 colleagues in law enforcement.
She said that Lisa traveled to Florida about a week before she died. "She said she wanted the warm sun, to see the palm trees and the blue sky," Daniello said.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Norman Dean Funeral Home in Denville, NJ followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church Denville, NJ, followed by burial services at the Denville Cemetery. * *Earthquake Shakes Morris County, NJ * * 2-2-09 : At approximately 10:35pm on February 2, 2009 what was best described as a "large rolling rumble" was felt and heard throughout the north western region of Morris county, New Jersey.

9-1-1 lines lit up throughout the county as residents began calling in with reports of their homes shaking.

Morris county authorities took full advantage of the county's MIRS radio system to contact areas involved in the quake. Early radio transmissions were heard coming from Randolph, Roxbury, Jefferson, Rockaway, Dover, Denville, Hopatcong and Wharton municipalities all trying to locate "the rumble" that simultaneously hit all of their towns.

The Mount Arlington Police Dept was dispatched to the old Hercules Explosives plant located off of Howard Boulevard, but they soon reported back no findings, commenting that this plant has been empty and out of service for many years.

At 11:08 pm Picatinny Arsenal confirmed with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that a 2.9 scale earthquake had occurred in the Morris County area. Local municipalities were surveying their towns for any signs of damage. No injuries were reported. Rockaway Twp, Denville and Randolph Twp fire departments were dispatched for reports of natural gas leaks.

Early reports placed the epicenter of the quake in the Dover/Morris Plains area. The latest report to date, places the epicenter in Victory Gardens, NJ.
New Jersey has had as many as 30 reports of smaller scaled earthquakes in the past occurring along what is commonly referred to as the Ramapo Fault. This fault runs approximately 70 miles northeast from Morris County, through Ramsey and Suffern and the Hudson Highlands, to Bear Mountain, N.Y. It follows the Ramapo River through the Ramapo Mountains and is actually a "braid of faults," or a system of cracks. Along this line -- to the point where Routes 17 and 287 now converge -- fierce quakes exploded daily and the Earth's crust split open to welcome the Atlantic Ocean 200 million years ago.

In New Jersey earthquakes usually occur when a slowly accumulated strain within the Earth's crust is suddenly released along a fault. The energy from this movement travels as seismic waves along the ground surface and within the crust. The arrival of this released energy is felt as an earthquake. In New Jersey, earthquakes are measured with seismographs operated by the Lamont--Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and the Delaware Geological Survey.

An earthquake's intensity is determined by observing its effects at a particular place on the Earth's surface. Intensity depends on the earthquake's magnitude, the distance from the epicenter, and local geology. These scales are based on reports of people awakening, felt movements, sounds, and visible effects on structures and landscapes.

Milton First Aid Squad Hosts Open House for St Clares Logistical Support Truck : On November 19, 2008 the Milton First Aid Squad became the first volunteer ambulance squad in Morris County to host an open house orientation of the new Saint Clares Health System Logistical Support Truck, also known as Unit 50. This Ford F550 tactical truck was generously donated by the St Clares Ladies Auxiliary of Denville and Boonton, New Jersey. Unit 50 was originally designed to support the Saint Clares paramedic staff, but after seeing a greater need for this support truck, four months ago it became available to local municipalities, providing logistical support at fire scenes and mass casualty incidents. The truck's coverage area spans the better part of three counties, covering approximately 1,200 square miles.

The Saint Clares Support truck is the first of it's kind in Morris County, NJ. Since it's inception, Unit 50 has already responded to several large scale emergency incidents such as the Kingstown Diesel gas station fire that occurred in Netcong on July 31, 2008 and the bus accident on Route 80 West onto Berkshire Valley Road in Roxbury, New Jersey on Aug 22, 2008. Unit 50 is driven by Saint Clares Paramedic Supervisors who are required to have ICS (Incident Command System) certification. The support truck can be requested by local incident commanders (for example : Fire Chiefs and Squad Captains) through their municipality's emergency dispatch center. A call will then be placed to CENCOM, located in Summit, NJ, who immediately dispatches the support truck to respond from Dover to the requested location. Unit 50 can respond in tandem with a request for a Saint Clares Paramedic MIC Unit ( Mobile Intensive Care ) or it can be requested solely for the use of it's logistical supplies to aid with firefighter rehabilitation at fire scenes as well as for assistance with large scale accident scenes. Once the truck arrives at the emergency scene, it's staff can assist if needed, with the role of providing basic life support. The role of the support truck is to offer assistance with an emergency, not to take command of it.

Saint Clares Paramedic Supervisor, Mike Gast, who has been an emergency medical responder for over 24 years and a paramedic for 16 years, provided onlookers with a tour of the vehicle. Among it's many impressive features, the Saint Clares Logistical Support Truck carries six patient backboards, two size "M" oxygen tanks ( containing approximately 3,540 liters of oxygen) , an eight patient multi liter oxygen system capable of supplying oxygen to eight patients at once, BLS and ALS (basic and advanced life support) supplies, halogen lighting for scene safety and traffic control, firefighter misting fans to cool down overheated fire crews, 15 gallons of drinking water, an on-board refrigeration unit for rehydration, a locked and climate controlled medications cabinet, a disaster board and communication command post fully equipped with radios and a cross-band repeater, Internet access and an EMS computerized patient charting system.

There is no charge to patients or municipalities for the use of this support truck and it's supplies. The Milton First Aid Squad hopes to adopt a new standard operating procedure that will quickly enable them to make use of this valuable service from the Saint Clares Health System.

Roxbury Structure Fire - Berkshire Valley Rd 10-30-08 : Flames lit up the evening sky as a heavy volume of fire ripped through an abandoned two story wood frame house located at 349 Berkshire Valley Road in Roxbury, New Jersey. Just before midnight on Thursday, October 30, 2008 the Roxbury Fire Department requested tankers (water tenders) from nine surrounding towns to respond to the scene this fully involved working structure fire. Authorities stated that the home, built in approximately 1870, had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years. The deep seated fire was brought under control in just about an hour by means of a tanker shuttle and pool operation due to the lack of sufficient hydrants in this residential area. Firefighters from Jefferson Township Company # 2 responded to the scene, as did firefighters from Mount Arlington, Hopatcong, Wharton, Mine Hill, Netcong, Budd Lake, Chester and Randolph. Incident command was terminated as the last hot spots were extinguished, nearly five hours later. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by the Roxbury Fire Prevention Bureau, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office's Arson Squad and Roxbury Police Department.

Shortly thereafter, Rockaway Township Fire Co # 3 and Rockaway Borough Fire were also dispatched. NJ Forestry Fire Service had alerted the township of a plume of black smoke in the Meridan Rd area. Upon arrival, first responding units began treating a burn victim who was found outside of the house while several firefighters from Hibernia and Rockaway Borough quickly attempted a succesful rescue of an elderly female who was trapped in the rear bedroom of the home. Three brave firefighters (Sara Matthews, Dave Tsolakis and Mike Heath ) set up a ladder to the bedroom window. Mike Heath and a fourth firefighter, Dan Jenkins, stabilized the ladder while Sara Matthews and Dave Tsolakis climbed up and went inside to perform the heroic act of rescuing the elderly woman from a horrible fate. The woman was taken to a nearby landing zone at Christ Church on Green Pond Road. NJ State Police North Star Helicopter flew her to St. Barnabus Burn Center in Livingston for treatment. A request for mutual aid and tankers was made, pulling in apparatus from surrounding departments. Rockaway Borough provided FAST team. Denville's Engine 5, Greenpond's Tanker 1, Community Co# 1's Tanker 2, West Milford Co 2 Tanker and Boonton's Tanker arrived on scene. The fire was brought under control in under an hour. The Morris County Sherrif's Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

 * * * Morris County Daily Record News release 10/21/08 states the cause of the fire was proven to be arson. * * *

"BREAKING NEWS: Granddaughter charged with arson in blaze that injured 92-year-old Rockaway Twp. woman. Elderly woman was rescued from burning building by firefighters.
A woman found standing outside a burning house Monday evening — and who allegedly told police she started a fire with gasoline because “I’m nuts” — was charged this afternoon with deliberately setting the fire that seriously injured her 92-year-old grandmother. Victoria Love, 55, who lives with her mother and grandmother, identified as burn victim Victoria Pisarcik, at 70 Meriden Road, has been charged with two counts of aggravated arson and one count of aggravated assault, according to the arrest affidavit signed by Superior Court Judge John B. Dangler. The grandmother, who was found by Rockaway Township firefighters physically restrained in a bed in a rear bedroom of the house, was removed through a bedroom window. The victim is currently being treated for life-threatening injuries associated with smoke inhalation at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston. Love, who told police she intended to kill herself by burning the house, is being treated at a hospital for burns suffered in the fire, reported by passersby at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Love told police she got gas from a metal container in a shed on the property, poured gasoline on a stack of paper in the kitchen and ignited them with a match. The affidavit said that Rockaway Township police on June 21 responded to the house on a report of an attempted suicide. An officer spoke with Love, who stated she was unhappy because there was no food in the house. Love’s mother, Victoria Robinson, stated her daughter wanted to light herself on fire in June.

JTFD2 Hosts 2nd Annual Fire Prevention Open House : October 5-11, 2008 was Fire Prevention Week and this year's campaign theme was "Prevent Home Fires!" Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity to call attention to the importance of fire safety, especially in the home, and to honor our Nation's firefighters. Across our Nation, firefighters put themselves at risk to protect our communities, and their selfless dedication has saved countless lives. During Fire Prevention week members of Jefferson Township Fire Department Company # 2 visited Jefferson day care centers, kindergarten and elementary schools to make sure our younger residents were being educated on the importance of fire safety. Firefighters brought a firetruck and their full turn out gear ( including S.C.B.A - Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) with air bottle and face mask, for the children to get an up close and personal view of what a firefighter would look like when responding to an emergency in their home. Part of the demonstrations that were presented included fire safety tips and the importance of having and practicing a home fire escape plan.

On October 8, 2008 Jefferson Township Fire Department Company No. Two hosted their 2nd Annual Fire Prevention Open House. Sparky the fire dog stopped by for a visit while members of company # 2 were on hand to answer questions and provide a tour of all the fire apparatus. A crowd quickly formed as firefighters performed a live vehicle extrication demonstration using the jaws of life tools to cut open a car. Firefighters use these tools when attempting to rescue someone who may become trapped in their vehicle as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Back inside Fire Headquarters, visitors were greeted with refreshments and provided fire safety information, fire hats, hand outs and coloring books for the children.

On the morning of 7/31/08, Jefferson Twp Fire Co # 2 and the Jefferson Rescue Squad responded to 35 Yacht Club Drive for an unidentified hazardous material spill at the boat ramp. Jefferson Co # 2 Fire Officer, Engineer Dave Cascone, established the incident command center on the scene behind the Lake Forrest Yacht Club. Nearby swimmers were immediately removed from the area and the Yacht Club Beach area was closed and secured with yellow police tape. Morris County and Picatinny Hazmat teams were requested as well as a response from the N.J. D.E.P. and the Jefferson Health Department. A green colored slick of an unknown material was seen across a span of approximately 300 feet of the shoreline. The Lake Forrest Yacht Club and the Lake Hopatcong Commission were not aware of any substances being used on the lake's shoreline to possibly control weeds. Picatinny's Hazmat team working with Jefferson Twp's Fire boat crew quickly contained the spill. N.J. State officials were also on scene to assist with the ongoing investigation. The spill was later determined to be hydroseed, a mixture of seed and paper pulp that is often used to seed grass on large lawn areas or commercial sites. Hydroseed is a non-toxic and non-hazardous product. The source of the spill is still under investigation.

8-22-08 Bus Accident -Berkshire Valley Rd, Roxbury Twp : Roxbury Chemical Fire Co # 3 quickly became the triage site for passengers of a tour bus accident that ocurred on the morning of 8-22-08. The Tour bus was en route from Manhattan to Niagara Falls, traveling northwest on Route 80, carrying 53 passengers when it was rear-ended by another charter bus. Emergency officials first got a 911 call at 10:30 a.m. resulting in 25 mutual aid ambulances responding to the scene to assist with transporting the injured to St. Clare's hospitals in Dover and Denville, Morristown Memorial Hospital and Hackettstown Regional Medical Center. Fifteen more ambulances were staged at the Rockaway Townsquare mall in case they were needed. State police said the accident occurred at approximately 10:15am when the Atlantic Tours bus driver hit his brakes, apparently the Hummingbirds Tour bus behind him couldn't brake in time and clipped the right rear of the Atlantic bus, sending it into the guardrail. The Atlantic bus then struck a support wall and slid 25 feet down a grassy, tree-covered embankment before coming to rest on its side on Berkshire Valley Road in Roxbury Twp. The Hummingbirds bus then struck a 2003 Dodge Caravan on Route 80. No life threatening injuries were reported. Officials say all the passengers who were taken to area hospitals were released by Friday evening.

JTFD2 Roof Operations Training 04/06/08 :
On Sunday, April 6, 2008 Jefferson Township Fire Co # 2 became the first fire department in New Jersey to use a new Roof Cutting Simulator designed and owned by Confined Space Services, Inc. Scott Warner and Greg Manning from CSS Safety Services provided the fire company with a comprehensive two part training course designed to allow firefighters to sharpen their ventilation skills in a controlled, safe environment. Warner explained, "If you don't have a vacant building you can use for training, where will you be able to practice roof cuts and ventilation?" CSS brings the roof to you with their new simulator. Only mere inches from the ground, firefighters can practice on a simulated roof without running the risk of a possible collapse. In the past, firefighters have used wooden pallets for roof training. The simulator uses actual roofing materials, so what you get is as close to the real thing as possible.

During the first part of the course, Gregg Manning provided a narrated slide show presentation, focusing on the different types of construction that firefighters will come across on the job and the risks associated when a heavy fire load is present. The second part of the training course is a hands-on cutting class instructed by Manning and Warner. Proper techniques and safety were first priority! Manning reinforced the need for S.C.B.A. when operating on the roof. He also mentioned that some of the hottest fires he has felt were during roof operations. After the first evolution was completed, the remnants of the roof were removed and a new layer was applied to the simulator in a matter of minutes, allowing all members of a large department to participate as well as allowing for multiple evolutions.

For more information regarding the Roof Simulator and Roof Operations training, please contact Scott Warner at (877)-271-2466 / Email: info@css-safetyservices.com or visit them on the web

2/24/08 Multi-Agency Ice Rescue Drill - Byram : Byram Twp Fire Dept Hosts Multi-Agency Ice Rescue Drill
by Erica Patrick, Correspondent

Sunday, February 24, 2008 - Byram Twp, NJ

Byram Township was the place to be this morning if your department is looking to hone their ice rescue skills! Area fire departments and rescue squads gained a new perspective on working together as one team when the Byram Twp Fire Department hosted this year's annual Multi-Agency Ice Rescue Drill on the frozen waters of the Allamuchy Scout Reservation. Over sixty rescuers from Byram Township, Andover Borough, Allamuchy, Green Township, Lakeland, Jefferson Township and the State Police were in attendance.

The focus of the training drill was to teach multiple agencies how to work together towards better mutual aid. Responders from different towns need to be able to blend their professional skills seamlessly in order to coordinate an effective rescue. "That's what we are here for. We are here to learn" stated Todd Rudloff, Byram Twp Fire Department's Lieutenant, as he kicked off the morning's drill. He added " Today's goal is to see all the departments work as one team." During the daytime manpower can drop significantly and quite often a call for mutual aid from surrounding towns becomes necessary. "This is why we train together" said Rudloff.

Responders were encouraged to break away from their usual training agenda which consists of practicing their ice rescue techniques with members of their own departments and instead work together as one large department. Stations were created on the shoreline based on the level of experience each responder has attained with previous ice rescue training. The highest ranking officer of each department was allocated as a Safety Officer.

Ice rescue training is very much like firefighting training in that, just as firefighters practice donning personal protective equipment and SCBA ( self contained breathing equipment) for fighting structure fires, Ice Rescue personnel must also be competent in donning their Cold Water/Ice Rescue Suits, as well as being fully trained in self-rescue skills in order to extricate themselves from the water should a rescuer accidentally fall through the ice.

Some of the day's activities included crawling out on the ice to a victim with the use of ice awls or picks. Other techniques practiced was self-rescue, solo rescue (one rescuer/one victim), two man rescues, universal hand signals and use of the Marsars sled and other equivalent rescue devices. Reach, throw, row and go techniques were practiced as well.

Rescuers who work from the shoreline control the advancement of the victim and the rescuer using tethered safety ropes. Rescuers from the shore manually pull both the victim and the rescuer from the break in the ice back to the shoreline. Shoreline personnel were reminded of the vital role they play during an active rescue. The rescue depends heavily upon their attentiveness. Rescuers must know which safety lines are connected to the victim and which ones are attached to the rescuer. Commonly, different colored safety ropes are used for this reason. Knowing which rope to pull and which rope to provide slack helps to coordinate an effective rescue.

Once back at the Byram Fire house, trainers and officers offered a critique session for those in attendance to offer comments, ask questions and review the techniques that were practiced. Byram Fire Chief Paul Conklin urged all the area departments to continue to train together. In closing Conklin said " Don't stop training because it will save your life and in turn save the lives of others."

12/08/07 JTFD2 Animal Ice Rescue Lake Hopatcong : Members of Jefferson Twp Fire Company # 2 and Jefferson Rescue squad responded to a resident's call for help early Saturday morning. Residents from New Jersey Avenue witnessed eight deer making their way across the icy top layer of Lake Hopatcong towards Halsey Island. The ice quickly began to break underneath them, trapping five of the eight deer under the ice. Three of the deer escaped harm and ran towards the shoreline of Halsey Island. The residents immediately called Jefferson Twp Police Department to advise dispatch of what had just occurred.

Responding emergency units quickly evaluated the situation and devised a plan that would allow rescue workers to safely make their way across the lake to reach the break in the ice where the helpless deer were now fighting to keep themselves above the water. The task at hand was a difficult one because the ice was too thin to support the weight of each rescuer. Trained members of Jefferson Fire Company # 2 quickly donned ice rescue suits and made their way towards the break in the ice. Rescuers in the water used ice picks to break a path into the ice for their rescue boat to travel through in order to reach the nearly frozen animals. Once in close proximity to the deer, rescuers needed to be especially careful of their positioning to ensure that they themselves were not injured by the strong kicks coming from the terrified deer's hind legs.

After enduring almost an hour of bone chilling temperatures of the icy Lake Hopatcong waters, four of the deer were successfully brought to safety . A young doe, who almost succumbed to the traumatic shock of the event was actively rewarmed by members of the fire dept and rescue squad who were not about to give up hope on this animal's recovery. The doe had swam back to shore ahead of rescue workers. Just as she made it to the shore, she collapsed. Rescue workers wrapped her in blankets to help raise her body temperature. Oxygen was applied to the doe's nose and warming packs were placed near all the vital organs. It was a slow process, but the almost lifeless doe soon began to shiver; her eyes reopened and she regained signs of life. Rescuers stayed with the animal until it was able to stand on it's own and make it's way back to the wooded area of Prospect Point.

LODD 3/8/08 In Memory of Raymond Barrett, Past Chief Apshawa Fire Co # 1 : * * LODD 3/8/08 Raymond Barrett, Past Chief Apshawa Fire Co # 1 * * * *

The alarm sounded just before 3 p.m. on March 9, 2008......Raymond Barrett, a veteran firefighter of 31 years and a respected Past Chief of the Apshawa Volunteer Fire Company,
had a choice......Stay home or go to the fire?

Barrett responded as he always did, but unfortunately on this fateful day he suffered a fatal heart attack while fighting a house fire in West Milford, New Jersey.

Once on scene, with black smoke billowing from the kitchen, Barrett joined a hose team heading into house. A firefighter that Barrett held close to his heart was also
manning the same hoseline, his son Wayne. Without warning, Barrett suddenly collapsed. His son and other firefighters carried him outside and immediately began CPR.
He was rushed to Chilton Memorial Hospital, but doctors could not revive him.

Raymond served in the Army and was stationed in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 in the 2nd Batallion 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One).
He was a recipient of the *Purple Heart* and *Bronze Star*, the *Combat Infantry Badge* and other State and County Medals. He was also a member of the Walkill Valley
Vietnam Veterans of America.

A funeral service was held 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2008 at the Echo Lake Baptist Church, 1355 Macopin Road, West Milford.
