Just after 12:15pm on Sunday, October 12, 2008 the Flanders Fire Department was dispatched to the Lowes parking lot in the Mount Olive Trade Zone shopping mall for the reported car fire. Multiple calls were made from cellphones as shoppers began to move their vehicles away from the now fully engulfed car fire. First due responders arrived to the scene of a fully emblazed vehicle spewing a huge black cloud of smoke and debris. The airbag and two tires had exploded prior to arrival. Firefighters acted quickly and blanketed the burning vehicle with foam. The stubborn fire appeared to be extinguished twice before finally becoming completely suffocated by the heavy layer of foam. Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters used a halligan bar and flathead axe to gain access to the trunk compartment of the vehicle. When this attempt was unsuccessful, a K-12 saw was used to cut their way into the trunk. No injuries were reported. State Troopers were on the scene for the investigation.
