Shortly after 1:30pm on Sunday, January 18, 2009 the Sparta Fire Department and Sparta Volunteer First Aid Squad were dispatched for a smoke condition in the wooded area across from Helen Morgan School in Sparta Township, NJ. Sparta Fire Chief John Thieke arrived at the scene and reported smoke coming from #12 Pinecone Lane. Upon size up, Thieke reported heavy fire in the rear section of a one story residential wood-frame structure. Ogdensburg Fire Dept responded to the scene to assist Sparta Fire and Jefferson Twp Fire Co # 2 relocated to Sparta's Fire Headquarters. A five inch line was stretched to a nearby hydrant on Mildred Drive as crews made their way down an extremely long and snow covered driveway to # 12 Pinecone. Firefighters found heavy fire in the basement of the home with fire extension to the roof. Interior crews worked quickly to get the blaze under control, working in unison with their ventilation team. Additional hot spots were knocked down as firefighters completed their overhaul operations. Fire officials stated the resident was not home upon their arrival and there were no injuries reported. The fire remains under investigation.
